Why Christians Will Face Opposition
John 15:18-21, Jesus warns his disciples that the world will hate them because they belong to him. He reminds them that he himself was hated by the world, and that they too will be treated with contempt and hostility. This is because they have been chosen out of the world, and the world cannot accept them because they are not of the world.
This passage speaks to the reality that Christians will face opposition and persecution in this life. Jesus' warning to his disciples is a reminder that following him comes at a cost. The world's values and priorities are often in direct conflict with the values of Christ, and this can lead to tension and conflict between believers and non-believers.
As Christians, we must be prepared for the reality of persecution and opposition. This may come in many forms, from ridicule and mockery to physical harm and even death. However, Jesus also reassures his followers that they are not alone in their struggles. He promises to send the Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen them, and to be with them always.
It is important to note that the persecution and opposition we may face as Christians is not necessarily a reflection of our own shortcomings or failures. Rather, it is a result of the world's rejection of Christ and his message. As Jesus says in verse 21, "They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me."
As we face opposition and persecution, we can take heart knowing that we have a Savior who understands our struggles and is with us every step of the way. We can also take comfort in the fact that our suffering is not in vain. As Peter writes in 1 Peter 4:14, "If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you."
John 15:18-21 serves as a reminder to Christians that we will face opposition and persecution in this life. However, we can take heart knowing that we have a Savior who understands our struggles and is with us always. We can also rest in the knowledge that our suffering is not in vain, and that we are blessed when we suffer for the sake of Christ.
